Solapur: In a significant development for affordable housing in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to unveil a groundbreaking housing project under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in Maharashtra’s Solapur district. Valsa Nair Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of the Housing Department of Maharashtra, made the exciting announcement on September 15, revealing plans to hand over 15,000 affordable homes in the coming month.
This mega housing initiative, representing India’s largest PMAY scheme, is nearing completion at Ray Nagar in Solapur. Singh enthusiastically stated, “The biggest housing scheme for the economically weaker section is now in its final stages of construction, and the PM is scheduled to inaugurate it next month.”
The project boasts a total of 30,000 homes spread across 100 acres, each unit covering 300 square feet and priced at approximately Rs 6 lakh. These residences are designed to be affordable, catering to individuals earning less than Rs 3 lakh per annum. Moreover, the houses will be allocated free of cost to various underprivileged groups, including beedi workers, textile mill workers, rag-pickers, and construction laborers, as confirmed by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), the nodal agency overseeing PMAY in Maharashtra.
Solapur, situated in close proximity to Pune, Maharashtra’s renowned IT hub, is the chosen location for this transformative housing endeavor. The project aligns with the government’s vision for a new housing policy that emphasizes innovation and modern housing concepts like walk-to-work, ensuring a better quality of life for the residents. Singh further disclosed plans to incentivize senior citizen and student housing, seeking input from all stakeholders and urging active participation from various departments and developers. Once the comprehensive policy is finalized, it will be released for public feedback and suggestions, underlining the government’s commitment to creating inclusive, forward-thinking housing solutions.
By addressing the housing needs of the economically disadvantaged and fostering innovation in housing policies, this initiative showcases a brighter, more accessible future for housing in Maharashtra. The anticipated inauguration event with Prime Minister Modi holds promise for transforming lives and fostering inclusive growth.
